English Camp - Garrison Bay

English Camp - San Juan Island Washington

English camp is a leftover from San Juan Island's English occupation during the Pig War during the mid 1800's when one side of the island was occupied by English forces and the other by American forces in American camp.
When the borders were established between English and American territories it was agreed that the Puget Sound passage would serve as the dividing line between the two countries. The dispute surfaced when it was determined there are two passages around the San Juan Islands and depending on which side of the island you chose to navigate, the island would belong to either England or the United States.

Today, English camp is a nice place to visit and step back in time to ponder what it must have been like during the Pig War and Garrison bay is a delightful place for boaters to set anchor and enjoy a long weekend.  Garrison bay also happens to contain one of the most holy sites for area indian tribes. A small island in the middle of Garrison bay is believed to be the portal in which spirits pass as they are born into this world and also where they must pass when they die.  Terms of Use
